Bargain Meal of the Week 4/30/09

It's time for another week of Bargain Meals! Erin over at $5 Dinners (a great read!) is hosting a gathering of bloggers all over the internet, creating frugal meals straight from the sales circulars of their favorite stores. Check it out for even more inspiration. I contribute every Thursday for the current sales at Publix, which run from Wednesday to the following Tuesday. Keep in mind that you do not need to purchase two of a product to get the buy one get one price. Publix marks down their products to half price for the BOGO deals.

Today's meal takes advantage of the following sales and should easily cost between $5 and $6:

  • Assorted Pork Chops $1.79 lb
  • Daisy or Breakstone Sour Cream, .99 or free with coupons
  • Yellow Corn .25¢ ea (if you purchase at least $5 in produce, use the Food Lion Q $1/$5)

Today's recipes sound really great and come with high ratings:

Saved 89% at Target

I frequently read about people who find great deals on clearance at Target. Generally, I try to stay clear of Target because it's too easy to spend money there. Today was the first time I found a great clearance item. I went in yesterday just to check the prices on their hot dogs because they had a $1/1 coupon. Unfortunately, they were cleaned out. There were, however, Chex Mix on clearance for .69 each on an end cap. I remembered that Target had a coupon for $1/1. So I went home and printed out a bunch and went back. I actually went back twice in order to purchase what you see in the picture. The Target coupons can be printed from HERE. Guess what's going to be in my kids' lunch boxes for summer camp?!?

60 Chex Mix Bags, on clearance .69 each
-60 $1/1 Target Qs
Final Price: Free plus .31 overage each

24 Pringles, 1.59 each
-12 MF Qs $1/2

My OOP is what I would have paid just for the sodas on sale without any coupons.

40% Off One Item at Michael's Coupon

Go HERE to print yours. Michael's is great because they have a lot of birthday party items. I like to use this coupon on the helium canister which is pretty pricey (I think around $40 before coupon). It can be used for many parties (unless your husband and kids play with it to make funny voices and do not close it properly) and makes helium balloons super cheap. The canister comes with a bunch of balloons. Michael's also carries numerous cake and cake decorating items for those of you with cub scouts who enter the competition in the fall. This coupon is good until 5/2 so hurry and use it if you have a need.

For the Locals: WCPR Summer Camp

If you live or work in Williamson County, and need something for your kids to do this summer, I have found that the best deal is the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Summer Camp. It is great! Registration started today and it fills up fast. It's a seven week program and costs $15 per day, and you actually pay per day. The camp is held at multiple locations in Williamson County schools. They do all kinds of fun things (swimming, movies, theme days, etc.). If you are a working parent, the times are accommodating, 7:30 - 5:30. I would love to send my kids to other types of camps, but they always start at 9 and end at 3 which does not work for us. I was really happy to find this one, reasonably priced and many fun things to do.

I love music, but I hate paying for it. Here are a few new free downloads that are promising.

Black Forest Cobbler

Need I say more? Mmmmmmh! Today I was at a DAR State Convention which is currently being held in Cool Springs (Tennessee, just outside of Nashville). I'm a member of the newly formed Sarah Polk Chapter in Brentwood. We are not your typical DAR group as we meet usually in the evening and contain primarily young professionals and moms of school age children. Other than saving money, my other obsession interest is history (not just my own, but for anyone who will give me info on their dead great-grandparents!). Anyway, one of the best things about the convention (this was my second one) is getting to buy the DAR cookbook, which sells out quickly. And yes, I did pay full price! It's worth it. As I was sitting in a meeting flipping through my newly purchased jewel (when I should have been paying attention...so bad), I happened across the recipe for Black Forest Cobbler. Yum. So what did I do? Rushed right home and made it. It's sinfully good.

Black Forest Cobbler
by Annette Bomar

Ingredients:

1 pkg chocolate butter cake mix
3/4 cup butter
3 eggs, divided
4 1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 8-oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1 21 oz can cherry pie filling

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl, beat 1 egg. Add cake mix and butter. Stir until well blended. (Should have the consistency of playdough.) Press mixture into a greased 9 X 13-inch glass baking dish. In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, cream cheese and remaining eggs. Pour over cake mixture. Spread pie filling over cream cheese mixture. Bake 30 to 40 minutes, or until outer edges browned and center is almost set. Best served warm or at room temperature.

Kroger and Publix Trips 4/24/09

Kroger has some great deals this week on kid food. With summer camp looming in the near future, I stocked up on kid drinks and goldfish for lunches. I spent more than I had planned but Kroger had some Rubbermaid water bottles and a really neat bread holder both 60% off. I also found four ball jars on sale 60% off. I have been toying with the idea of trying my hand at canning something. Hopefully I won't blow anything up! I'm looking for a good book if anyone has some suggestions.

Good News Friday: Peek Inside a Kangaroo's Pouch

This is so cool! Click HERE to see the video.

Peek Into Kangaroo's Pouch Shows 2 Tiny Pink Joeys
by ANNA JO BRATTON, Associated Press Writer

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A zookeeper's efforts to earn a kangaroo's trust has paid off with a video showing twin joeys, tiny and pink, growing inside their mom's pouch.

The male Matschie's (MATCH-ees) tree kangaroo twins are about 6 inches from snout to tail and they are starting to grow hair. Matschie's are an endangered species and the births at the Lincoln Children's Zoo in Nebraska are the first twins on record.

The video was taken about 16 weeks after the joeys' birth. They'll emerge from the pouch this summer.

To record the footage, zookeeper DaviAnn Buggi attached a tiny camera to her finger, then gently reached inside the pouch of the adult kangaroo, Milla (MEAL-uh).

Bargain Meal of the Week 4/23/09

It's time for another week of Bargain Meals! Erin over at $5 Dinners (a great read!) is hosting a gathering of bloggers all over the internet, creating frugal meals straight from the sales circulars of their favorite stores. Check it out for even more inspiration. I contribute every Thursday for the current sales at Publix, which run from Wednesday to the following Tuesday. Keep in mind that you do not need to purchase two of a product to get the buy one get one price. Publix marks down their products to half price for the BOGO deals.

Today's meal takes advantage of the following sales:
Split Chicken Breasts, 1.69 per lb.
Skippy Peanut Butter, 1.25 (BOGO price)
Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers, 50% off (around .50 to .80 cents)

Total price should be between $5 and $6 dollars, even better if you have coupons for Skippy and Green Giant.

Thai-Style Grilled Peanut Chicken

recipe from CDKitchen.com

Ingredients:

1/2 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons curry powder
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 pounds cut up chicken

Directions:

Blend peanut butter with honey and soy sauce until smooth. Stir in curry powder and garlic; mix well. Place chicken in a large plastic bag or a bowl. Pour peanut butter mixture over chicken and mix well. Close bag or cover bowl and chill at least 2 hours or up to 12 hours. Remove chicken from marinade and broil or grill over medium heat 4 to 6-inches from heat. Turn chicken and brush with marinade occasionally while cooking. (Do not brush with any more marinade less than 10 minutes before chicken is done.) Cook until chicken is no longer pink in thickest part (cut to test), 15 to 30 minutes depending on size and piece.

Serve with vegetables.

Free Band Aids at Publix!

I stopped by Publix today to get some more free Vitamin Water for my husband. While there I checked to see if they had any Men's One a Day Vitamins (on sale 4.99, buy two, use Publix Q $5/2 and 2 manufacturer Qs $2/1, making them .49 each), but they were out. While on the aisle, I passed by the band aid section and there was a blinkie box spitting out coupons for $3 off of any two Johnson & Johnson products. Shazammm! The next aisle over was the travel section which had travel size band aids for .79 each and little emergency kits for $1.49 each. The coupon works with these products. That means for the travel band aids, they are free plus $1.42 overage and for the kits, free plus .02 overage.

Great Deals at Kroger!

Great Day to Buy Newspapers!

One of my most favorite coupons is coming out today! It's the $2.50 off of one Electrasol Powerball Tabs or Gelpacs. I always stock up when this coupon comes out. Dishwasher detergent is expensive and this coupon usually makes it under a dollar with a sale. This one coupon pays for the paper with overage. The other coupons are bonus!

If you are local, just fyi, Frugal in Franklin says that you can get papers for $1 at CVS. I am going to try it today, hopefully with ten! Check out I heart CVS for current sales/ECB deals if you are planning a trip.

Free Lightbulb at Home Deport Today Only!

The Home Depot will be giving away 1 million CFL bulbs in support of our environment on Earth Day 2009. Receive a free EcoSmart 14w CFL bulb from participating The Home Depot stores on April 19, 2009. Quantities may vary by store. Limit one per customer while quantities last. No purchase necessary. Good News Friday! Music!

Here's some good news for you about music:

Once upon a time, the only chance that you had to hear music was either when you or someone else played it. Today, there’s more music than ever before; more mainstream, independent and world music available on more devices and in more places. Also, research made between music and intelligence concluded that music training is far greater than computer instruction in improving children’s abstract reasoning skills. Do you suppose that with all the music around us we have gotten smarter as a race?

(Source: Shaw, Rauscher, Levine, Wright, Dennis and Newcomb, “Music training causes long-term enhancement of preschool children’s spatial-temporal reasoning,” Neurological Research, vol. 19, February 1997 )

In honor of the joy of music, here's an All Free New Music Playlist for your Ipod! Just for fun, download all these songs (without listening to them), put in a separate play list and try them out for the weekend. They're clean, I could play them in front of my kids! Get them quick as they may be gone tomorrow. They are mostly from Amazon, but there is one each from NPR, ITunes and Walmart. Enjoy!

For the Locals: Put This On Your Calendar

On Thursday, May 14th, from 5:45 to 7:45 the Nashville Public Library Main Branch downtown at 615 Church Street will show in their auditorium the movie WarGames with Matthew Broderick for free. Being a product of the 80's, it's one of my favorites! My kids enjoy it as well. You may want to put it on your calendar!

Bargain Meal of the Week

It's time for another week of Bargain Meals! Erin over at $5 Dinners (a great read!) is hosting a gathering of bloggers all over the internet, creating frugal meals straight from the sales circulars of their favorite stores. Check it out for even more inspiration.

I don't remember where I got this recipe, however, it's a keeper. This week boneless skinless chicken breasts are 1.99 per lb and Mueller's pasta is 1.39 BOGO (about .70 each). This could easily be under $5.

Garlic Brown Sugar Chicken

Ingredients:

Brown Sugar, 4 tsp unpacked
Chicken Breast, no skin, 12 ounces
Garlic, 1 clove
Butter, salted, 2 tbsp
Salt, 1 tsp
Pepper, black, 1 dash

Directions:

This makes four servings, 3 oz per person
1. Melt the butter in a frying pan
2. Brown the garlic in the butter
3. Add chicken breasts to garlic and butter and cook thoroughly, adding salt and pepper as you like it.
4. When chicken is fully cooked add brown sugar on top of each breast
5. Allow the brown sugar to melt into the chicken (about 5 minutes)
6. Serve with your favorite carb, and veggie or salad. We usually have rice or noodles and carrots or green beans.
