Great place to take the kids on vacation!

You may have noticed that I took a little break from blogging this past weekend. That is because I was in the mountains with family and friends where there is no Internet. We went to Bryson City, NC. I am always searching for fun places to go that are not too far away and don't cost too much money. I like to read personal accounts because I think they give you a better picture of what to expect. Unfortunately, there are not as many as I would like to see online to get good ideas. So, I am going to tell you about this vacation spot.

First, I live in a suburb of Nashville, TN. It took us about 5ish hours to get there. Actually a little longer because we stopped in Pigeon Forge (you drive through) for a quick break for the kids. If you plan for it, there is a cool Titanic Museum on the way that my kids would love to see, but we did not have time for. You will also drive by a very good Krispy Kreme which we stopped at and got doughnuts for then and the next morning, yumm.

We stayed at
Estes Cabin which you can book by calling. It was totally cool. It was built in the mid 1870's and is the oldest home in the county. However, it has great air conditioning, four bedrooms with five double beds, a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. You know that smell that you get when you go into an historic landmark home for a tour? This place has it. If you love history, you will love this place. There were even some photocopied documents to peruse which belonged to the owner, including his confederate papers. If you go, check out the photos in the upstairs hall. My only complaint was that the outside lighting was non-existent, but since we always carry flashlights, it wasn't a problem. Our friends rented a more modern cabin nearer to the Nantahala River (15 minutes from town) which was two bedrooms with one double and four bunkbeads and no washer/dryer for $165 per night. However, it does have a pool and access to horse back riding. The Estes Cabin cost us $145 per night for the five of us. I think it is more if there are additional guests. It was worth the price. Just an idea that worked well for us - I read Little House on the Prairie to the kids on the way up. It describes how they built their cabin and gave our kids a better appreciation for our cabin and the time that it was built.

This cabin is also in a great spot. About a mile down the road you can rent tubes for $3 each (all day) and float down a beautiful creek. It is part of the Smokey Mountains National Park. There are also trails. We took one to see a waterfall which the kids played in. About a mile around the mountain in the other direction is Bryson City. Bryson City is a small town with numerous cute shops and a train station.
The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad has a depot there. You can get a coupon here for $3 off the price of a ticket. However, since we were meeting up with our friends, a couple with four children, we decided to rent the caboose which was a flat amount of $499, not much more than buying tickets for all of us plus you get snacks and special treatment. The kids loved it! I think if you did it in the fall, it would be even more amazing. It was a four hour round trip ride (one hour is stopping for lunch). When you get to the end point, the train stops and the engine is moved to the other end of the train. Thus, if you were in the caboose, you become the first car after the locomotive on the way back which was also a thrill for the kids.

If you are looking for a family restaurant, there is a family pizza place (I think it was Anthony's) across from the train station with great pizza and reasonable prices. They also serve locally made beer which is quite strong (just fyi). I also noticed that the prices in their grocery stores were better than those where I shop. There is a gas station in town that is open late and it sells basic food supplies (very expensive). Otherwise most every place else closes early. Keep that in mind if you want to buy groceries.

We were only there for a few days so we didn't get to see all the things we would have liked.
Cherokee is a neighboring town with an Indian museum that looked really interesting. They also have a nice movie theater. If you have more time check this town out. Also, the Biltmore is around an hour away - definitely an awesome day excursion.

If you want a quick weekend trip, this is a great, less commercial than Gatlinburg, place to go!

Bargain Meal of the Week 6/24/10 Shrimp Skewers & Mango Sauce

It's time for another week of Bargain Meals! Erin over at $5 Dinners (a great read!) is hosting a gathering of bloggers all over the Internet, creating frugal meals straight from the sales circulars of their favorite stores. Check it out for even more inspiration. I contribute every week for the current sales at Publix, which run from Wednesday to the following Tuesday. Keep in mind that you do not need to purchase two of a product to get the buy one get one price. Publix marks down their products to half price for the BOGO deals.

Okay, it's hot enough to cook on the sidewalk around here. It's the kind of sticky hot that leaves you breathless and not wanting to even move, much less cook. To avoid heating up the house any more than you have to, here's a great recipe for the grill! My advice to you is for your husband to do the hot outside stuff and you do the easy inside blending!

Items on sale that can be used in this meal:

Large White Shrimp, 31-35 lb., $4.99

Mangos, 67¢ ea

Georgia Sweet Corn, 15¢ ea

Persian Limes, 20¢ ea

Shrimp Skewers with Curried Mango Sauce
from Coastal Living, MAY 2000

Ingredients:

  • 30 unpeeled large fresh shrimp
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Curried Mango Sauce (recipe below)
  • Garnish: lime wedges
Directions:

Peel shrimp, leaving tails intact. Devein shrimp, if desired.

Toss together shrimp, chili powder, salt, and olive oil in a large bowl. Thread 5 shrimp onto each skewer, bending each shrimp to pass through skewer twice.

Grill, without grill lid, over high heat (400° to 500°) 4 to 5 minutes or just until shrimp turn pink, turning once. Serve warm with Curried Mango Sauce. Garnish with lime wedges.

Curried Mango Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium mango, chopped
  • 1/3 cup peeled and chopped English cucumber
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Directions:

Process all ingredients in a blender until smooth, stopping once to scrape down sides.

Serve the above recipes with corn on the grill and/or rice.

Harris Teeter Super Doubles 6/23 - 6/29

Harris Teeter will be having Super Doubles starting this Wednesday! Hot Coupon World has started their good deal list HERE. Coupons valued $1.98 and under will be doubled, up to 20 per transaction. For instance, a $1.50 coupon is worth $3.00 doubled and a $1 coupon is worth $2.

They will double up to 3 identical manufacturer coupons or 2 identical printable coupons per day. So, if I have 4 manufacturer coupons for $1.00 off Lysol Wipes, they are only supposed to double three of them and will not accept the fourth. However, in the past, I have used three manufacturer coupons and two printable coupons for the same product (five items) and it has not been a problem.

Their BOGO policy is that they will take 1 coupon per BOGO deal and that you are not allowed to use 2 coupons on a BOGO deal (one for each item). Many (but not all) HT’s are fine with you just buying one of a BOGO item and it will ring up at half price and they will let you use a coupon for that one item and it will double. BUT – not all HT’s will let you do this so don’t be surprised if they don’t allow you to use the coupon on one of a BOGO deal. YMMV – which means – your mileage may vary.

Publix Trip 6/12/10

$24.68 (saving 70%)

My son's seventh birthday party is Saturday, and I had to get some supplies to make a cake for him and his friends. I invited his class of twenty so I expect perhaps 10 to show for a bowling. At first I wanted to go the easy route and just buy a cake from Publix. That was until I found out how much they wanted for a cake. Ouch.

While I can understand going professional for grown-up big events, young children will not remember what they ate at a birthday party they attended when they were six or seven. If you are trying to impress their parents, then by all means, go professional. However, if you invest in a good pan and use printable coupons at Michael's for other cake supplies, you can make a great cake. A few years ago I made an Indiana Jones cake that my kids still talk about. I think half the fun now is preparing for the parties by making the cake the day before with the kids (see last year's above). My total was higher than I wanted, but I was on a birthday mission (and it was still less than buying one cake at Publix)!

Bargain Meal of the Week 6/12/10: Tasty Tuna Burgers

It's time for another week of Bargain Meals! Erin over at $5 Dinners (a great read!) is hosting a gathering of bloggers all over the Internet, creating frugal meals straight from the sales circulars of their favorite stores. Check it out for even more inspiration. I contribute every week for the current sales at Publix, which run from Wednesday to the following Tuesday. Keep in mind that you do not need to purchase two of a product to get the buy one get one price. Publix marks down their products to half price for the BOGO deals.

Tasty Tuna Burgers
from Allrecipes.com

Ingredients:

1 (6 ounce) can tuna, drained
1 egg
1/2 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1/3 cup minced onion
1/4 cup minced celery
1/4 cup minced red bell pepper
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons chili sauce
1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 dash hot pepper sauce
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
4 hamburger buns
1 tomato, sliced
4 leaves of lettuce (optional)

Directions:

Combine tuna, egg, bread crumbs, onion, celery, red bell pepper, mayonnaise, hot chili sauce, chili sauce, dill, salt, pepper, hot pepper sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well. Shape into 4 patties (mixture will be very soft and delicate). Refrigerate for 30 minutes to make the patties easier to handle, if desired.

Coat a non-stick skillet with cooking spray; fry tuna patties for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until cooked through. These are fragile, so be careful when turning them.

Serve on buns with tomato slices and lettuce leaves, if desired.

Link Love: Saving Time in the Morning

Time management is very important to me, so any tips on getting out of the house faster is appreciated! Real Simple has an article, 5 Ways to Save Time in the Morning, which gives some great tips on how to speed up your departure. Now if I could only get the kids moving on time (which, of course, is not a problem on the weekend when they willingly get up before the crack of dawn)...
